Week 1
Pre-Session
Personal Introduction
Hi everyone!
My name is Yilin Lee. I was born and raised in Germany, where I have lived half of my life. After that I have moved around a bit, spending about ten years in Hong Kong and 2 years in the UK. I have graduated from a BArch at UNSW in 2015. I am currently in my second semester of MArch.
After graduating from my undergrad, I have worked in an architectural company in Hong Kong. The company did not only build some of the tallest buildings in Hong Kong, but also put great emphasis on sustainable design, where some projects received BEAM and LEED platinum ratings. I was involved in the delivery of two waste treatment facilities, one being electrical waste and the other general waste. Since both of these were government projects, I have had to work in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Department, and also with integrated waste solution companies such as ALBA and Keppel Seghers. This exposure has certainly sparked my interest in sustainability and sustainable development, but more than that it also helped me realise that I lack necessary knowledge in this area. My reason for choosing this course, therefore, is to gain more knowledge on the matter of sustainability, which would then allow to contribute more positively and effectively to the development of sustainable architecture in Hong Kong.
Attached is a photo of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Facility in Hong Kong, which was awarded as Finalist in Hong Kong's Green Building Award 2016 by the Green Building Council of Hong Kong.
It is very nice to meet everyone here!
Thanks for taking the time to read.
Regards,
Yilin
In-Session Reflection
The definition of sustainability
The definition of sustainability is such a broad one, that it is difficult to reach a general consensus on what exactly sustainability means in relation to the built environment. If we were to ask each of our classmates, their answers would surely vary subtly among each other. For me personally, however, sustainability means to conserve natural resources to sustain an ecological balance, so that the needs of future generations, as well as that of ecosystems does not become compromised with time.
Post-Session Reflection
E-portfolio
I have decided that the most effective medium to conduct an e-portfolio is via blogging. I hope to be able to write all my personal reflections in a more organised and systematic way, where I also hope that my reflections would cover most, if not all of the topics that are discussed. Therefore, I have organised my blog into weeks and subtopics for each week.
Groups
I am part of Group C. We are six members in the Group. Fortunately, all of our group members have dissimilar personal backgrounds, and work experience. While our group is predominantly made up of architects, we also have an urban designer and a landscape architect. In terms of ethnic background. some of us are from Germany, Burma, China, and Bangladesh. Hopefully our diversity can better help us in seeing things in a different perspective, and contribute to more positive peer learning.
